Before I took this course with professor Chan, I freaked out because of her reviews. They all claimed she was tough and rigid. I beg to differ. If you do your work and participate, your grade shouldn't be too bad. Your first project grade will likely shock/scare you (mine was in the mid-eighties), but the rest of the grades are generally higher. One tip that I would give to those coming into the class is, listen during the critiques (at the end of each project, you will hang your work alongside the rest of the class' and then all of you will sit and provide complements/constructive criticism). It is not only important to listen to your classmates, but also professor Chan. You should be able to sort of gauge based off of what she liked/didn't about your work and others, the type of thing she generally looks for when she grades. Honestly, this tip works for most all art classes as well. Don't work purely for what you think the professor will like though, just have a general idea in mind. In the end, I enjoyed this class. Be prepared to work, but also remember that this is a fun class, don't get so absorbed in your work that you forget to have fun and experiment with it. I would recommend this class to most anyone.
My recommendation is this: only take this if you have decent art skills. It may be challenging if you do not and you will spend a whole lot more time on the projects. The class is set up in 2 separate parts, the first quarter basically you learn about different art techniques and work up to some pretty big projects. However, she doesnt grade each time you finish anything, but instead youll submit a portfolio at the end showcasing your work. This gives you plenty of time and options to include into the portfolio. Seems like most people that I knew got an A on this first part. The second half of the class is project based, I think we did 4-5 total. She grades each one after the deadline and you usually get 1-2 class periods to work on them. The rest must be done outside of class which can be very, VERY time consuming. As a person who has always enjoyed drawing and making art, the outside of class work wasnt too bad, but sometimes frustrating when i had more pressing things to do, like study for a test. Make sure to actually talk in the critques, our class was super quiet and she got annoyed that we didn't talk that much. Overall, the final is just another project and a zoom critique online so dont stress about that. Def reccomend if you consider yourself artistically inclined in any way, shape, or form.
