This was my favorite course this past semester. The topic that Murphy teaches is about the Beatles and it is very interesting for anyone who loves music. He himself is obsessed with the Beatles so he tends to go on tangents and ramble which can get kind of boring but overall the class is great! Homework includes listening to the playlists he makes, reading about the songs and then writing paper. As far as ENWRs go, this is probably one of the greatest topics to write about and he is probably one of the nicest and most relaxed professors.
Okay, these comments will tell you that John Murphy loves the sound of his own voice and is the most boring man you'll meet. I read those same exact comments going into this class. Are they true? To an extent, maybe. He is a talker, but honestly he isn't boring, just repetitive. Besides, repetition is a positive thing when you're trying to learn. I won't lie, I fell asleep in this class... A LOT. But, it was still worth taking. He's one of the sweetest and most caring professors that I have met in my time here. Go to his office hours, he will answer any and all questions you have. It is also incredibly hard to get less than an A in this class. Why? Each "big" (3 papers total, 3 pages each) paper we wrote, we submitted as a mandatory draft beforehand. He wouldn't grade these drafts, but tell us what to fix. We submitted our revised versions for our final exam grade, and as you can imagine, it's hard to fail when the professor has already looked at your work and instructed you on what exactly to fix for a better grade. Overall, Murphy is a very forgiving and genuinely kind professor that will ensure your success if you let him.
