I took Professor Ingle's Crime and the Detective ENWR and it was miserable. Professor Ingle often moved due dates and would change the homework without notifying the class. She also took a ridiculous amount of time to return papers. She often low balled grades. I would suggest finding a better professor. This class was about reading detective novels, however none of our writings were meant to be about crime or the detective.
Professor Ingle is not the most organized professor. She took forever to give back papers, which made us have assignments due after the last day of class. There is also way too much reading for a class focused on developing writing skills. I don't know if I became a better writer by taking this course, but I know how to approach college essays better. Overall, I would try to find a different professor. Try to find an ENWR that has a good professor and that sounds interesting to you.
Af far as ENWRs go, this one was pretty good. Professor Ingle is a tad odd but really nice and helpful when you go to her office hours. Homework is just reading various detective fiction stories and occasionally there will be a written aspect. There are three papers, but a process where you can rewrite and replace your grade after she's graded them a first time. #tcf2016
There was a lot of reading assigned, but you don't really have to do it. Looking up a summary or two was almost always sufficient for the discussion and daily quizzes. She missed 4-6 of our classes, so that was sweet. There was 3 papers, all 5-7 pages, and some occasional homework. It's not hard to get a B, but shes a harsh paper grader so don't expect an easy A either. MUST attend class. As a professor, shes a little bit strange, but overall nice. Willing to meet outside of class. She is disorganized, so prep for that. Assignments often got pushed back. Honestly, don't buy the books. There's a lot of online reading, and most of the stories are so old you can find them online for free.
Sarah is very nice and approachable, and is very helpful in office hours and gives lots of feedback on papers. There's not a huge amount of writing besides the papers, mainly short (like 1 paragraph) reactions to readings, or things related to the whole paper writing process. She takes a very long time to grade papers, and grades hard, but fair. She also gives you a chance to turn them in and get feedback before you get the final grade. She is passionate about her field.
The books: Rewriting was not really necessary to buy. We used it, but you can get it at the library and find parts of it online. The Gruesser book was necessary though.
Other: She cancelled class about 3-4 times, which was nice. Quizzes are super easy.
