I took this course online during COVID so keep that in mind when reading my review. Professor Keyser was honestly the sweetest and most easygoing professor one could hope to have for an English course. The readings she would give us each week were very doable and interesting. We didn't have any exams in this course, just 3 big essays and short 250-word writing assignments each week that were associated with the readings for that week. At the beginning of the semester she would ask you to fill out a grading contract regarding the grade you hoped to achieve in her class along with a set of requirements needed to meet that grade. If you worked hard and fulfilled those requirements then she would give you that grade. She provided you with great feedback on each of the essays and writing assignments and even gave us the opportunity to rewrite one of them for a higher grade. I HIGHLY recommend attending her OHs to discuss your essays with her before you submit them, because she'll give you the necessary feedback to make it better. Also make sure to participate in discussions during lecture - she really likes it when people make an effort to make a comment themselves as opposed to her having to call on people. There is no judgment in her course and she is very friendly and easy to talk to. I highly recommend taking this course. There wasn't very much writing during lecture, all we did was discuss our opinions on the readings. Good luck :)
The ENWR course that I took was about utopias, and I enjoyed it! It is evident that Ms. Keyser enjoys what she teaches and cares about her students. She leaves a lot of helpful feedback on writing assignments, and most of the class time is for discussions. The discussions are pretty casual as they are meant to help us understand the text in a deeper way, not just for a grade. The class isn't a lot of work, and is graded on a pass-fail system. In the entire semester, if you pass 8 250-word responses to the text, 2 essays (and their rewrites), and the final project, then you get an A. As long as you complete what she's asks of you in the prompt, its not that difficult to pass these writing assignments. Overall, I would highly recommend.
Professor Keyser was an incredible professor! I do not normally find English to be my favorite subject, but this was one of my favorite classes of the semester. The small class size really allowed us to get to know the professor and other classmates. She uses a different method of grading, which is strictly pass/fail, rather than letter grade. This allowed me to stress less about specifics of my paper, and gave me more creative freedom. She also sets the class up in a way that you can decide what grade you want to achieve, and adjust the amount of work you put in to meet your goal. She was still figuring out the best way to operate this grading scale so I am not sure if that is how it will be in the future, but I loved it. The readings she chose were well thought out and interesting, and class discussions were always productive. She also really cares about her students, and still remembers me and my work if she sees me around. She was available for feedback, and always found a way to ask questions that pulled a creative side out of me, instead of telling me what she thought every time. It developed a lot more confidence in my writing abilities. She was a great professor and I thought this was an amazing choice to fulfill my first writing requirement.
