I honestly cannot imagine an easier and more enjoyable ENWR. I think it is physically impossible to get anything less than an A-. My freshman-year English class in high school required less work. If you are looking for a super mentally stimulating class where you can hone your writing skills, I would actually not recommend taking a class with John. However, if you are looking to breeze through a COMPLETION GRADE ENWR with a funny, self-aware professor who wants nothing more than for students to enjoy and pass his class, then you are in the right place. We had 4 "papers"; one of them was a 5-6 page personal reflection, one of them was a 6-8 page GROUP PAPER, meaning I only had to write 2 pages, and the third one was a Zine compiling the contents of our second paper, and the final paper was a 1-2 page cover letter for the other 3. All in all, I cannot recommend taking your ENWR or any English class with John if you are looking for a low-stress experience.
One of, if not the most enjoyable, classes I have taken. Prof. Modica knows what he is talking about and is extremely passionate about the topic. I felt that I benefited from the readings and the feedback immensely. Prof. Modica lays out a very interesting way of thinking, using metacognition and other writing techniques, as well as a solid framework of how to develop the essays you are working on. Throughout this class, I could see my writing improve immensely. The readings do take a bit of time to understand, but they are very well worth it, especially once we get further along in the class. My topic was the good life, and I ended up getting an A in the class. Please use this class as well as Prof. Modica to improve your writing and find new perspectives on writing.
