Best ENWR professor by far. I didn't love her at first but she grew on me throughout the semester. Every ENWR class has 3 essays but Walker's were only 1000-1200 words. Other professors' were 6-8 pages. There was also very minimal homework and she was an easy grader. If your looking for an ENWR class that won't be a burden on your schedule, definitely take this one.
Amazing Enwr professor. I heard other Enwr professors were awful, but this class was honestly one of my favorites at UVA.
It's literally just you writing about your likes and dislikes. Only 1000-1200 words per essay. Very little work outside of that.
She had contests where she paid the winners gift cards in class.
Honestly, now that I think about it, she's probably my favorite teacher at UVA. Just take it with her.
I really enjoyed the course topic I had in ENWR Culture and Society (it was the Almighty Dollar). We discussed the role of money in daily lives and the concept of the American Dream. Prof. Walker does a great job of creating a fun environment that fosters creativity and inclusivity. The assignments are relatively simple and can range from taking 30 minutes to 1-2 hours. This class (and ENWR in general) is all about how much you enjoy the topic and writing, so I would recommend this class if you like talking about economic/social/political issues. My one complaint is the Prof. Walker often rants for long periods and, while she stays on topic, she can lose the attention of her students. You really have to be paying attention to pick up all the information because she talks very fast. I still really like her though, and she was very nice and gave extensions when you needed one. Recommend this class!
I did not enjoy this class. The topic has changed to 'The Almighty Dollar'. This means we discussed basic financial terms, the American Dream (A LOT), and money. I am not interested in the topic, but the topic wasn't the only thing I didn't enjoy.
Professor Walker loves to compete us against each other. If you don't enjoy in-class debates, essay contests, and final project contests... this is not the right class for you. I did not want to do these things in my ENWR, but others may feel differently. Honestly, lets just say some students get overly aggressive.
I did get an A. There were no grades given throughout the semester, so the grade breakdown feels arbitrary. She basically just puts a grade in SIS. You never know your actual grades on anything, so its a fun little surprise. She does tell you random ideas about how to write your essays that doesn't help and will make it more difficult.
Super easy class, love the topic and Professor Walker! The class layout is fairly simple. There is some light reading you need to do for the first class of the week and then you need to read your peer's work for workshop which takes place during the second class of the week. It is very important that you do the readings and small assignments that go with them so that way you can fully participate in class, something that is very important to Professor Walker. Professor Walker is very flexible about what you write about and grades mostly based on improvement. Make sure you listen to what she and your peers say during workshop because using that feedback in your writing, particularly in the final portfolio, will be taken into account when she grades. Easy A class.
One word: AMAZING.
She is one of the nicest professors I have ever met at UVA and she teaches very well. If you need to take ENWR and want something that is interesting, you will get a lot out of, but not stressful, take this class with Dr. Walker. She gives you room to grow and emphasizes that writing should NOT be something that you stress about and are limited by. She really helped me grow out of the 5 paragraph analytical structure that has been forced into us through middle/high school.
You talk about some really interesting concepts with money, and I always looked forward to class. She would let us work outside sometimes, and it was really nice. She also had competitions throughout the course so you could get rewarded and get out of assignments if you won!
Structure:
3 essays, 1 (Credit/No Credit), 2: Shadow Grade, and 3rd was the final one which was due at the end of the course with a reflection and project to accompany it. Before each class, you had some articles to read or a movie to watch, nothing stressful or too long! I cannot recommend this class enough!
