Professor Eaton's ENWR on "Place" was a great course to take. All of the reading were extremely interesting and perfectly aligned with current events. The course was very easy in terms of workload. There was a discussion post due on Monday, a mid-week class discussion on Wednesday, and a weekly reflection due Friday. None of these took much time and gave me a lot of time to focus on the substance of the readings. The big assessments of the course were 3 major essays, but Prof. Eaton gave you plenty of time to prepare, edit, and gain feedback before submitting the final draft. If you put effort into all of the assignments and meet all the rubric requirements for each essay, then you should have no problem getting an A in the class.
This class was excellent! Andy Eaton was phenomenal. Throughout the class I could tell he genuinely wanted us to learn and improve our writing. He is very helpful in office hours and is always willing to provide extra feedback. The workload is not overwhelming and he gives a lot of notice before assignments are due. I could not recommend this class enough. (for reference I was an okay english student in high school, but finished this class with an A)
Professor Eaton was a great guy overall and very knowledgeable about writing. He had lots of good advice about how to write our essays, and he stimulated class discussion well. The course itself was fairly enjoyable, as the texts we read we interesting to think through and analyze (especially Emerson and Thoreau), although some of the topics were a little bland and politically one-sided. The class felt like it was meant to steer us toward a certain viewpoint—but the content wasn't the main focus of the class; the writing was. The assignments, especially the essays/workshops, were very helpful to improve my writing, and I feel like I've grown as a writer. Some of the due dates and whatnot were a little disorganized, but this may have been a side effect of the COVID format. Overall, a helpful class for focusing on writing, not the content. And a good professor.
Although some of the readings he sends are a bit long, Mr. Eaton is a great professor. He was always super respectful and funny with the class. He was understanding of any issue we had outside of class and asked for feedback on the amount of work he was sending (He even cancelled some assignments when we told him it was a bit too much work). I would take his class again 100%. The feedback he gave on our assignments was great and the way he structured the class was very beneficial to our writing.
