Wonderful teacher! I had her for her writing class focused on photography and it was awesome. By any means try and snag her course because a lot of my friends are taking enwr classes that they hate. She's very nice and probably one of the smartest instructors in the English dept. (Duke Grad). 100% you won't regret taking her course (hoping I can get her for my second writing requirement too).
Professor Stephenson is such a good teacher. She really knows how to foster great discussion during seminar and she was always so friendly and approachable. The class wasn't difficult per se, but I always spend hours on whatever writing assignment I'm doing because I get a lot of anxiety when I write so I can't say you'll do fine with just throwing together a paper the night before it's due. That being said, Stephenson is very fair when it comes to grading and if you put in the necessary effort by completing all of your community partner shifts and going to every lecture you shouldn't expect anything lower than a B. The projects will be nearly all of the actual graded work in the class, the rest is more participation grades through going to class and doing the occasional forum post. This is probably the least stressful and most wholesome ENWR you can take. Honestly, no matter what other ENWR you are considering you won't regret taking this over it.
Dr. Stephenson is an amazing professor; simply put. She definitely goes out of her way to help develop good writing skills and make sure you're comfortable with your written works well before submission. In addition, her community engagement class is a great way to get some volunteer experience, and overall very eye-opening. I definitely recommend taking this course, it was a great balance of fun activities and discussion. Plus, it's not too difficult at all.
Amazing professor! I was really scared of taking an ENWR class because of how subjective the whole course can be, but this class was not only easy, it was also fun, eye-opening, and an overall great experience. The topic I took was about food insecurity, and it really opened a window into a quality of life I never considered-- that food insecurity occurs all around us, even at expensive institutions like UVA. The class has a volunteering requirement of approximately three hours a week (the minimum attendance is 8 times total throughout the semester, but even if you go to all of them, the max you can get in that category is a 95%). The writings are really easy, especially if you go to office hours or ask her to edit your essay before the final submission several times (and you fix what she tells you), you can automatically guarantee yourself a 98 on the project (that's the max you can get). I cannot emphasize enough how sweet and understanding of a professor Professor Stephenson is, and if you're in the College, I'd definitely recommend taking your second writing requirement with her.
Stephenson is one of the greatest professors at UVA! She truly cares about all of her students and wants to see them succeed. The topic of my ENWR was writing about food. This class was compromised of 3 5-page essays. For each essay you turn in a rough draft which she edits without grading. Only the final draft is graded. I felt like I learned a lot in this class, but it did not substantially interfere with my other classes. I would definitely recommend this ENWR to anyone that is able to get into it.
