Easily one of the best professors I have ever had at UVA. His lectures are super interesting and allows students to actively engage and debate topics in whatever story we read for that day. Think of that class as basically the best book club you would ever go to. Plus-I cant believe this was possible- the papers are so much fun to write!! TAKE THIS CLASS
I loved Prof Sligh, his enwr was my favorite class that semester! Our theme was Sherlock Holmes, so if you like reading and discussing fiction, it's a good ENWR to take. Two papers, a midterm (and we could bring in a sheet of paper), and a project at the end where we analyzed a film adaptation of a Sherlock Holmes story. He's super passionate and engaging, and genuinely cares about his students. I found it easy to participate, but I like reading and discussing fiction. It is a lot of reading, at least it was for my first semester at UVA, but since it's fiction I was fine with it- if reading is not your thing, I'd choose a different ENWR. I've heard people either loved or hated their ENWR- I loved mine!
Professor Sligh is actually the nicest person I've met on grounds. His class is pretty interesting and his essays are pretty fun to write. His ENWR is about Sherlock and our final was a film report. There were only three other essays during the semester, one of them in class, and our only homework assignments were one paragraph reflections on the reading before class. There is a lot of reading but for the most part they're short stories so it's manageable. Professor Sligh isn't the most lenient when it comes to grading according to what I've heard about other ENWR professors, but I think his grading is fair and it is very possible to get an A in his class. Honestly this class was the only one I enjoyed all semester so if you have the opportunity to take it 12/10 I recommend it.
