I cannot recommend this class any more. I felt my stress melt away every time I walked into class. Whatever it is you're stressed about will simply leave you whenever you talk to Prof Mokoko. We all knew we would end with an A, so we just knew we had to try our best on every assignment and be our real self. It was great. I learned so much about the world. I still don't understand how Mokoko managed to have such a profound impact on all of us. I nearly cried on the last day. Go to lunch with this man, talk to him after class, ask him for letters of rec, learn from him. His life, his stories, his words - let it change you. You'll come out of that class a better, more worldly, and knowledgeable person. You'll learn how to talk to people and communicate - which is exactly what an ENWR should do.
You certainly do write in this class, but it's low-stakes. You might have a few articles to read before class, and your hw will be to write ONE SENTENCE ONLY about them. Like something real, not just some fake bs. I learned to think and actually put myself into the one sentence I wrote, and I barely did any work. We had one paper for our 'midterm' which was straightforward, and then our final project was a presentation on a controversial topic, which was also straightforward. Genuinely, I wish everyone could take a class with Mokoko. You will be missing out if you don't take your ENWR with him.

It's worth taking this class if you have the chance. Definitely recommended.
This class isn't a traditional writing class where you learn the writing skills and write all the time. It's rather a seminar that engages all the students in the class. You'd expect to read a couple of interesting articles each week and discuss it in class. Professor Mokoko brings his passion and love to the class while sharing his life stories. He also devotes a lot of time outside of class room to talk and meet with students. He is a really good professor.
The workload is also easily manageable. You would write one essay during the first half of the semester and complete a digital project on any topic you like at the end. Reading isn't too much each week and they are all interesting.
If you can take this ENWR, TAKE IT. Mokoko is nothing but kind, inspiring, and encouraging. He really wants to see his students succeed and is an awesome guy to know at UVA. He is super wise and has such a cool life and you lowkey just want to listen to him speak forever cause you learn so much and gain so much perspective on everything ever. Readings and discussions are enjoyable. There is one paper and one project for this class. Both big assignments can be tailored to the individual's interests so you can choose what to research/write about. I highly highly recommend any class with Mokoko. You will not regret it. If everyone at UVA was required to take a class with Mokoko then our community would be much more inclusive, understanding, welcoming, kind, respectful, honest, and real.
Professor Mokoko is by far my favorite professor at UVA. It was both of our first semesters at UVA and he made me feel so comfortable and welcomed. I am a math major and wanted to do the bare minimum and we only had to write one 5 page essay and a mixed media project about a concept of our choice for our final project. We would have weekly readings and all you had to do was annotate them and come to class ready to say literally just something. Professor Mokoko always has so many fun stories to talk about and he made me genuinely interested in the class information. He is more than willing to meet you after class, and we would always grab coffee or lunch on the Corner which I think shows he cares so much about his students. I would highly recommend this class to anyone!
I actually took Dr. Mokoko's ENWR course in fall 2023 which was his first semester teaching at UVA. Compared to my friend's ENWR classes, this one is very easy. We only wrote one essay towards the end of the semester instead of 4+. For homework we would get one or two short articles to read and analyze then we would spend the whole class discussing the readings. The reading would take about an hour and you do have to keep up with the readings since the class is largely based on participation. Dr. Mokoko has so many interesting stories and life experiences that he likes to talk about in relation to the reading topics. We only had about three graded assignments, but it was worth it to only write one essay all semester. The final project is a presentation of a digital exhibition you create on race, rhetoric, and social justice.
