Dr. Rawson is a fine professor for this course. Not great. Not horrible. It's not hard to get a good grade, but it is not an enjoyable class for most of the students. Dr. Rawson is somewhat full of himself and a bit mean. However, his lectures are beneficial and he leaves constructive comments on essays after submission. He allows resubmissions of some essays after revision, which is a great way to bring up your grade. If you are looking for support in drafting, go to his office hours. Bring specific questions and concerns you have with your writing to his office hours and he WILL help you. If you go in aimlessly, you might as well not go at all. The workload is extremely manageable. Dr. Rawson is a very middle-of-the-road professor for ENWR 1510. If you're required to take the class, he will be just fine.
I took this class with Professor Rawson Fall 2022, his first semester at UVA. The entire class all he talked about was how he used to work at the University of Southern California and their expectations for their classes are much harder, ie "At USC this paper would have been 10 pages but I can only make it 5 here." His class was interesting and I did enjoy learning about American subcultures, but Professor Rawson is so smart and intelligible in the subject that you can never be right. He always knows more than you and does not convey this in the most polite way. I ended up with a fine grade in his class and utilized office hours for questions about the essays, but would not recommend him. His most famous comment left on one of my papers was, "Next time you submit an essay, read it out loud first."
