Literally the best ENWR!! He was super nice and encouraging! He always left positive, constructive criticisms on every paper. Homework every week was pretty much just reading a passage and choosing a favorite quote that we then shared in class and a one-page paper modeling the writing technique we learned about in the previous class/passage. I think the homework was graded mostly on completion and showing that you tried, which made it pretty easy. Most of the final grade hinged on three five-page essays that could be whatever topic we wanted, but we just had to incorporate quotes from interviews we conducted. Class time was spent sharing quotes, having a couple of people read their writing, and discussing the passage we read for homework.
TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Easy A, especially if English isn't your strength. We only met one of the two classes each week because the other day was for individual work (aka more time to do your homework). Homework was just reading something each week and finding your favorite quote. Very interesting readings, and I hate reading. I absolutely loved this course. We learned about what work is and read different examples and it was very relevant to life in general. Only 2 essays total and we got to choose the prompt (it just had to do something with work, which is very general). Other than that we had maybe 2 (250 word) assignments that were pass fail. He gave us very helpful advise on our papers (which we would turn in a draft, and then a final) and I don't know anyone in the class that didn't get an A on the final essays (drafts were pass/fail). If you do the work (which is minimal), you will get an A. Really helped out my GPA and got my first writing requirement out of the way. Prof. Gelly is also just a really cool guy and very laid back and chill. (Also, I put 1 hour of reading per week cause it wouldn't let me do 0.5 but it was minimal)
The topic for Professor Gelly's ENWR this semester is "Writing About Work". Not going to lie, I was worried about it being boring when the topic was revealed, but I really had nothing to worry! Despite the class being scheduled for twice a week, we only met once a week and had the other day off to work on homework. We had weekly readings on the topic of work; some were a bit dry, but most of them were an easy read. Otherwise, the course is graded on a few writing responses, a group documentary project (watching one and analyzing its creative techniques), and two interview essays (the first where you interview your classmates, and the second where you interview your people in your home community). Gelly is a really chill, friendly, and accessible professor and gives a lot of great feedback on your essay. A warning for fellow introverts: the class is very discussion heavy, so if you're shy, you won't be totally out of your comfort zone, but be prepared to speak up at least once or twice each class. Otherwise, I would definitely recommend this class. As long as you put in a good effort, you should get an A.
This class was great. The theme was work, so all of our readings were centered around different professions. Each week, we had one class for 1 hour and 15 minutes. The other day we didn't meet, and actually got an extra day to do our readings. The readings were interesting, though a few were boring and hard to get through. They did get progressively longer throughout the semester, so I recommend starting them sooner rather than later. Also, I thought I could get away with only reading a snippet sometimes, but Piers is a big fan of cold calling people if he notices they aren't talking. So, either read and be prepared to speak, or say something early on so he doesn't call on you later. He is a really nice professor, and connected with his students very well. He was accepting of any and all ideas, and really encouraged us to write in our own style, no matter what that may be. There were a couple short written assignments for homework, and they were all creative and easy. There are two essays for the class, and the prompt is simply "interview 2 people and write about work", so there's really a lot of freedom.
If you can pick a professor I highly recommend Piers. I think I gained a lot from this class, but it was relaxing enough where I didn't feel overwhelmed about my writing. I don't really like English, but I enjoyed our discussions and assignments.
PIERS IS THE ABSOLUTE GOAT!
Your entire grade is on two essays (which everyone gets an A or A-minus on). The rest of the course is pass/fail, which includes a revision of your first essay, and four to six one-page assignments (which should take thirty minutes each).
You do need to participate, so be aware of that. But, as long as you speak once or twice per class you'll be fine. Also, you only meet once a week (for an hour and fifteen) instead of twice a week. Piers makes the second day a "workday" so you don't have to go to class.
All in all, PIers is amazing and you'll actually enjoy being one of his students. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!!
Please take this class. Professor Gelly is the best. Like seriously the best professor I’ve ever had. I had never done readings for classes before but he made me motivated to be prepared for our class discussion every day. Class has 2 essays and a bunch of pass/fail assignments and one final project and he gives everyone at least an A- most people get As. Plus his class is fun and you learn. It’s also the least work of the Enwr’s but definitely put effort in cuz it’s not a guaranteed A
LOVE THIS CLASS! Piers is the best ENWR professor ever, you can tell he cares about his students. The assignments are super easy and most are pass/fail so if you do them you should be fine. There are two big papers and a project but they're super easy. The topic is also really engaging. Highly recommend!
