Professor Childress is fantastic! This English class was one of the best classes I've ever taken at UVA. Her selection of books have been wonderfully curated, and she is very knowledgeable on the perspectives of doctors, patients, and caregivers alike. The readings aren't bad, but they are long sometimes. I would stay up really late or spend the entire day before class reading or skimming if I had not finished before. Class participation factors into the grades a lot, so readings for a class is necessary. Other than readings, there were no other weekly assignments. There was one take-home midterm. The final exam or project is a 10-15 page paper or fictional piece. She also requires attendance of number outside events, which encouraged me to attend fantastic guest lectures. There are occasional smaller writing assignments (1-2 pages, double spaced) that she would assign, but those were infrequent and still fun. This class made me more aware of the reality of the medical field. As a premed, this is a fantastic humanities class because I loved reading books that are right down my alley. I cannot say enough good things about this class. Highly recommend!
This class was definitely one of my favorite classes at UVA. Professor Childress is wonderful and very knowledgeable about the subject and the field. Her mind is like a treasure chest of all kinds of stories and experiences. Class is easy work-wise. There are a great deal of readings, but they are all interesting. The in-class discussions were easy too. Two take-home exams and a final paper, which were all very reasonable. I learned a lot from this class, which I will carry with me for many years to come.
