Professor Chou is the best. She is a very engaging lecturer and is really quite a captivating speaker. In terms of grades, this class consists of around 4 short papers, a group case project, a midterm, and final. The papers can sometimes be rather ambiguously graded but it really depends on your TA. Everything else is pretty easy to do well on. All in all I found this to be a pretty easy laidback class and I honestly looked forward to hearing Professor Chou speak every week.
This class now has the acronym LPPL. Professor Chou is hands down one of the greatest lecturers at UVA. This class teaches you how to be an impactful citizen in society and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nothing is too hard, just requires a little brain power. Just try really hard on every assignment and an A is doable. Not much else to say here except TAKE THIS CLASS! It will change your life...
There really isn't much to say here:
1. This course does social psych better than Social Psych does.
2. Professor Chou has a gift and every class was practically worthy of a standing ovation.
3. Aside from a few short-but-annoying policy papers that are rather ambiguously graded, the course is exceptionally manageable, and very easy to do well in.
This class lives up to the hype, and I would recommend it to anyone regardless of year or major.
This is a great class to take with Professor Chou! The course will teach you a lot about behavior and leadership skills and it is a very interactive course. It is very easy to get an A- in this course, and doable to get an A. Make sure you show up to every class and participate in all the activities fully. I will say that our TA was a little annoying with the grading because he was very ambiguous when giving out the policy paper grades, so make sure you talk to Professor Chou if you think there is a grade discrepancy. Although this class is 2 hours long, the class itself will go by pretty fast because we do so many activities and games during the time. I am a pre-comm student and I think some of the concepts I learned in this class will come in handy in the future!
Super cool class, learn about lying, negotiating, leading teams and you have some cool projects along the way. Dont be scared by the long class period- Prof. Chou always has group activities and breaks and make sure to keep everyone involved. You dont have to be interested in Public Policy to take this class, it leans more toward just leadership and cool life strategies in general.
I never write reviews but I'll write one for this class. Hands down the best course I've taken at UVA thus far. Professor Chou is an incredible instructor and despite the long class, keeps you engaged and interested. The content of the class is also very practical and you can take away quite a bit from it. Work-wise, this class is quite light. You have to write a few policy memos but they're not too demanding. You're given two tests with a cheat sheet. You won't regret taking this class.
Chou is a great professor who really cares about her students. She engages students through group work which is a nice break from a seminar class. Not a difficult class at all but I would highly recommend doing the extra credit (super easy) because it just ensures you get the A. For the exams, you get a cheat sheet which makes them pretty easy. The TA's grade the papers annoyingly difficult and there does not seem to be much rhyme or reason behind their grades.
I don't know what the reviewer below me is talking about. This class was so much fun! Professor Chou is an engaging lecturer, and though the material could get a bit repetitive or "obvious" at times, the class was never a bore. This was by far my favorite class of the semester and even one of my favorite classes at UVA ever. Both Professor Chou and the TAs really cared about the students. It is also one of the very few classes that actually lives up to its name as an "easy A." There are about 4 papers (each is 2 pages long double-spaced), a "group" paper, and midterm and final (both with a cheat sheet). Ridiculously easy material and engaging too! 100% recommended.
This is by far the best class I've taken at UVA. Eileen Chou is an incredible professor. She's very knowledgeable about what she teaches and is engaging. She wants her students to do well and will happily offer help if you ever need it.
The class material is really interesting and simple to grasp. Pretty much everything you do in the class is fun, and she splits the format of each class into a lecture/activity/lecture format. If you don't really like long classes, this splitting up of the class makes it a lot easier to get through.
Overall, absolutely fantastic class. It's very similar to Social Psych, but it provides some real-world applications and examples. Eileen is also fantastic and a professor that everyone should have.
You just cannot find a better class to take if you want to engage in real advice about leadership and how to be a person to thrive in society! Eileen Chou is the only instructor for this class and there is a reason for that. She knows her material well enough to be looking consistently at the audience while narrating her Power Point slides like a story (anticipating and leading into questions/answers). On top of that, I appreciate Chou's genuine belief in what she teaches; ever met instructors who teach one thing but do the other themselves? Chou is the complete opposite! She does what she teaches and leads-by-example.
This class is easy in that concepts are not hard to grasp (they are intuitive even). However, they are highly highly practical in real life and I received what I had gone into the class expecting: how to be an effective leader who is able to motivate his/her peers to achieve and succeed. This class taught me principles that I would be bumping around on my own for 3+ years to realize. That's it.
Very applicable, interesting, and low stress class. Almost every week there was some sort of simulation meant to demonstrate concepts we learned in class or saw in case-studies (ie. effective negotiation tactics). In reality, the majority of them were "building the tallest marshmallow tower" type activities you'd encounter at a team-building retreat. You get a cheat sheet for tests and she puts up very detailed slides that cover everything so tests are a breeze. Papers were all one-page memos about a topic of your own choice and graded pretty well, especially when you balanced it out with the high test scores. Absolutely no need to do the readings so don't buy the coursepack. Fun, low-stress, and applicable class (unless you've taken social psyc, in which case not much is new).
