This course is an absolute blast and a half. Professor White has a great sense of humor, and the material is very interesting as well-
a combination that makes for some very captivating lectures. Additionally, the workload is not that bad: three 4 page papers, midterm, final, and some short quizzes based on the readings. I found the readings in this class to be more manageable than HIME 2001. It's a great option to use to satisfy the non-western and history requirements, but even if you have those fulfilled, I urge you to find a reason to take this course.
This is an amazing class! It truly gives you a non-western perspective of the Middle East and the areas surrounding it during this era, and shows how the Ottoman Empire rose from practically nothing into one of the most feared entities in the whole world. White is a great lecturer, very funny, very willing to help you out if you have question (you will, because he talks very fast). Overall great class, definitely take if you are a History major or looking for a good and manageable non-western perspective!
It is an amazing class that offers a different perspective on history concerning Europe. During lecture Professor White challenges the Eurocentric perception of the Ottoman Empire that was placed on the Ottomans and makes you realize how much they've impacted Europe . Definitely a fun class that will expand your knowledge. Easy and interesting readings with fair exams and response papers. Also you get to watch a Turkish soap opera for extra credit!
Professor White is great - very enthusiastic and helpful. Although the lecture time is a little long, Professor White makes it much better with his ample knowledge and jokes. If you do the reading, the five essays for the class aren't bad. The final and midterm are fair. Fun class if you're interested in Ottoman history, very informative - one of the better history classes I've taken.
