This course was a great introduction to the School of Nursing. Dr. Connelly is a great professor who shows that she cares about her work and the students. She felt very welcoming and I never had any complaints with her. The course is composed of lecture (3x a week, 50 mins) and a lab (once a week, 2 1/2 hrs). The lecture is very engaging and I liked the props she brought in. Also, the lab goes by pretty fast when you are focused on the material. The homework was not too bad and the lecture tests were pretty straightfoward as long as you paid attention. There are also lab tests, but as long as you do your part in lab, it should not be too hard. Overall, this class is great for my first semester at UVA.
This class will cause a lot of stress, there is no easy way to say it. It is an extremely content heavy class. Each unit has an exam covering lecture material and an exam covering lab material, so there are a lot of exams. HOWEVER, if you study you will be fine. The average grades on exams were usually low As, so a majority of people do really well. I finished class with a 97. Sometimes the labs are really long and headache-inducing, so you need to kind of suck it up. The only homework you have (besides studying) is a pre-lab video with workbook pages, and post-lab workbook pages. You do not have to read the textbook, so if you are hesitant about buying it I would say you don't need it. Connelly is the sweetest professor out there. She always tells to many stories and really cares about all of her students. You will definitely enjoy this class, even though it is a lot of work.
Albeit the amount of mental breakdowns I've had about this class, this class has been one of the best in my life. It's not that the material is by any means hard and if you space it out, you should be more than fine. Dr. Connelly lectures while you fill in fill-in-the-blank notes you buy from the bookstore. Everyone I know generally does well, depending on what kind of grade you're aiming for, as to get an A in the nursing school is a 95+. The lecture exams are more difficult than the lab exams, as the latter often seems more fun since you're identifying structures on models and diagrams than physiological processes. All in all, this (and microbiology with Dr. Connelly) will be one of your favorite classes at UVA and the highlight of first year. Just pace yourself and enjoy what you're learning because you're going to have to remember it all again for the NCLEX.
As a first year nursing student, this class was the best way to start my time at UVA. Everyone says it, but Dr. Connelly is the absolute best. She teaches the material really well and always had funny stories to help us remember tricky concepts. She not only is awesome in class, but would tell us all the time that we could talk to her about anything or ask her for anything outside of class. She is one of the most giving, caring, and genuine teachers I've ever had. She really truly cares about her students as people, and it's so evident. The class itself isn't a breeze, but you'll do well by knowing the notes really well. There isn't homework outside of class, but it was really helpful for me to review the notes along the way, and not just the few days before the tests. The tests are fair and straight from the notes, so if you study hard for tests, you'll do well. I'd say the material gets trickier as the semester goes on, so make sure you pay attention in lecture, and, once again, know the notes!
Dr. Connelley is an amazing professor and like a mother to all her students. If you have the chance to take a class with her, I highly recommend it. There is not a lot of reading and her exams come straight from her notes which she basically gives you for class. As long as you memorize the notes before an exam, you can easily get an A.
