Don't take this class. If you're looking for a second writing requirement, there are plenty of others that you can consider. I went into this class hoping that I would get a feel for Gothic literature, and previous ratings had seemed relatively good. I was wrong. From the beginning of the semester the class was disorganized (Wall did not send out her order to the bookstore). She was at times condescending, would go off on tangents and overtly have favorites throughout discussions. Classes dragged on and suffering biweekly was not worth it. In terms of the papers for the class, her grading offered limited feedback and was subjective.
Most definitely not just the worst English class but simply the worst class I have ever taken at UVA. Professor Wall is extremely biased and more objective than subjective. She has a certain viewpoint and does not accept anything outside of it. The class discussions are quite dry and she usually has a prepared trajectory for it. That being said, if anyone in the class brought up a contradictory point or simply anything outside of the discussions topics she has planned, she was never ready to speak about it. She would merely acknowledge it and move on.
There was an insane amount of reading for the class every week and if you cannot read 300 pages every two days, this class is not for you. She has a massive book list for the semester which is probably part of the reason why she was never able to focus on an in-depth analysis of the text. There are some readings that were also never discussed (very few, but still), again probably because she has so much.
This class is really not worth the time and I don't feel like I learned anything from it.
