The class he taught was called the Vicious Arts and we basically just analyzed major villains in literature and what defines evil. We read everything from Shakespeare to Browning to Cormac McCarthy. I enjoyed the readings for the most part but they were really intensive. It would be about 2 to 3 acts if it was a play or 60 to 100 pages for prose for every class. If I ever missed a reading it would mean a good number of hours in the library trying to get through some pretty heavy material. Milton was god awful to try to read but I really enjoyed Lolita and Blood Meridian. Otherwise there is not much more work. There are 3-4 essays and a final.
He is a pretty good lecturer and has some interesting insights into the material. The class was mostly discussion and that was fun. Overall I highly recommend this class if he ever decides to teach it again.
For "The Vicious Arts"
The reading was pretty long, but if you are able to make it through the assigned material and show up to class ready to talk, you will get an A. Hequembourg is an amazing lecturer, and you'll leave every session feeling smarter than were going in. It fulfills Second Writing, which is another big plus. Take this class if you can!
