This was my favorite class of the semester! Professor Woolfork provides interesting insight into the stories and really encourages class participation. She gives excellent feedback on our essays and is often available for extra help. During this class you get great insight into the varied experiences of Black women throughout the 20 century and even to today. Professor Woolfork is personable, engaging, and gets to know her students well. She invites the entire class to have dinner at her house at the end of the semester, and the last major work we cover is Beyoncé's "Lemonade". I took this class during the first semester my first year and was worried about taking a second writing requirement that early. I shouldn't have been. The class was diverse and pretty evenly split among first, second, and third years, which gave excellent diversity of opinions and perspectives. I would definitely recommend taking this class.
I LOVE LISA WOOLFORK! She is one of the best professors I've had so far! I like English, but I'm not an English major or anything. The reading is a LOT sometimes, but other times it's just a short story which is really easy. They're always stories (short stories or novels) which makes it a lot easier to read than say a textbook. I enjoyed all of the works that we read and she really makes you think about them deeply. Sometimes literature classes can seem irrelevant to real life, but she really made me realize the power of literature and how the black identity is portrayed in our society. She cares a lot about her students. She baked us food multiple times. Definitely go to office hours. This is one of those teachers that you want to build a relationship with. The class is small, too, so you get to know your classmates as well. My class was pretty diverse with students both black and white, greek and non greek, an athlete, 1st years 2nd years and 3rd years, lots of non english majors. She is a tough grader, but not unfair. She challenges you and pushes you to write papers that you are proud of. I took this class my first semester and it was by far my favorite class.
Funny, intelligent professor. Gives thoughtful critique on essays, demonstrates interest in students. You will never see another English class the same way again. Selected readings are thought-provoking, as is the discussion. The general format of the classroom is very engaging. Would recommend to enjoy knocking out your second writing requirement and your non-western perspectives requirement at the same time.
This was such a wonderful class! Be forewarned-- it is a very hard class. It is a lot of reading and writing per week-- about a book per week and a 5 pg paper every week and a half. it is extremely intense workload, but I think the knowledge and improvement in your writing are worth it. If you can put the time into the class, you will benefit from it. She is a GREAT teacher
This was an excellent course. Woolfork is a very passionate and great teacher. Class was more like a discussion which made the course interesting. Woolfork is a hard paper grader but if you're trying to improve your writing, this class is the way to do it. She will give you constructive criticism about your writing which will help you write papers in the future. Course material was very interesting and I suggest taking a course with Woolfork before you graduate.
She seems intimidating, but she is the best! If you want to make your time in an English class worthwhile and actually improve, she is the key to success in this area. She is very confident, but that only impacts your level of confidence. She is eager to help, and by attending office hours, she will have a better understanding of who you are and the way in which you write---easier grader.
This class definitely made me work. You have to read everything, and you were graded everyday on participation. My class was very small (12 people?) and it was quite obvious who was and wasn't slacking. Woolfork really motivated me to do well, but she was definitely a harsh grader. This class was a lot of work, and I found that most of my time throughout the semester was spent on her HW/Projects.
