THIS REVIEW IS FOR ENLT 2555: PROTEST LITERATURE! Taken Fall 2018. Unfortunately, there isn't a selection for this course, so I though it best to put it here. Ethan is a great teacher. He's really nice and super passionate about literature, and it's really refreshing to have a teacher that is able to smoothly facilitate discussion by contributing to the conversation with his own analysis. You have readings due each class and class is basically like a free-form Socratic seminar where you discuss literally anything you though about the readings from initial impressions to themes and symbols. Usually he will have guiding questions but those are really there as discussion guideposts; a long as you have something interesting and insightful to say, he accepts your comment. As long as you consistently participate in discussion (talking 2-3 times each class) you'll be fine participation wise. Grading is 3 essays, and you can rewrite one of the first two at the end of the semester, and he grades pretty fairly. Most of the readings he chose for this course were interesting and engaging (w/variance for personal taste, of course). Unfortunately, I think Ethan has mentioned this is his last year as a grad student, so he may not teach this course again.
