Professor Galloway is really nice and super funny. He's really approachable and will help you with anything you need outside of class. However, for a 1000 level course his tests are a little bit ridiculous. If you study A LOT you might be able to pull off a B, but they're difficult. He does offer an extra credit paper to bump your grade up at the end of the semester though. If you're not interested in Environmental Science, I wouldn't take this as an easy A class.
Great class, nice guy, little harder than one would expect for a one-thousand. If you read the textbook you'll get an A.
I went to class for the tests and to turn in the homework but since he posts the slides and all of the info is from the textbook you dont have to go.
I'd recommend it for any non-science majors who need a little literacy in renewables and anthropogenic changes to the environ.
Loved this class. Galloway is genuine and approachable and really wants you to learn. Extra credit project at the end which boosted me to a B+ and really made a difference on my GPA. Always hands out candy on holidays and fridays that most people are gone. The pace of the course goes kind of quickly and you really have to understand the information to get As on his tests, so a background in environmental science would be helpful. Readings are optional and theres a total of like 3 or 4 assignments besides the tests.
If you need to complete your science requirement, take this class. Professor Galloway makes this class. He gives out free candy all the time, and you will be more excited about nitrogen than you ever thought possible. Getting an A should not be too difficult, and the final is not comprehensive. Also, there's an extra credit project that can get you an additional five percentage points on your final grade, which is ridiculous if you think about it.
Galloway was a great professor. He is incredibly smart, respected in his field, funny, nice, and overall just a complete beast. However, the class is relatively difficult in general. The average of our first test was a 67% just to show you. However, there is a curve (that he doesn't really tell you ever so you just kind of have to guess how much it will be). Don't buy the textbook I never used it and it wasn't a problem, everything is from the slides/in class. Go to the review sessions they are very helpful, and if you need it do the extra credit. You could get 5% added to your grade for it (which is an insane amount if you think about it), but it is a lot of work (think the paper is like 25 pages or something). I found studying for this class with a friend helped a lot (usually i never do this) because you can explain the concepts to each other which you will have to do in detail on the tests. Overall got an A w/o putting in too much time besides long grinds for the tests. Great intro to env class!
Galloway has inspired me to major in the EVSC field. His class is well organized and engaging. He is an absolutely phenomenal professor. I made the mistake of doing all the readings the first half of the semester. His tests are almost entirely based off of his lecture power-points AND comments. However, his tests are very difficult. They're almost all free response, and many people felt the grading was unfair. So, go to class, take good notes, and be prepared to power study for his two exams and final, and you'll get an A. TAKE THIS CLASS!
This is a really great class! I loved Galloway, he is adorable. There is a textbook for the class but you do NOT need to read it. Unless you really want some more background or something, the tests only contain material from the lectures. I recommend just renting one. Pay attention in class and study the powerpoints he uses (he posts them), and you'll do well on the tests. Also, if you go to class on Friday he usually gives out a test question and passes out candy. There were only 2 graded homework assignments that he graded very leniently and were pretty easy.
Favorite professor at UVA! He is so, so passionate and extremely knowledge about the matter he is teaching. He served on the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) which includes the best scientists around the world. He is extremely modest, and my classmate and I just looked him up to see the extent of what he has done, and it's amazing. The subject material is a little dry if you have any sort of background in env. sci., but if you go to and pay attention in class and you'll do fine. His review sessions before the exam are very helpful. We had an exam the day of Halloween, so in the next class after the exam, he and his wife came to class dressed in gorilla suits and brought candy for the entire 150 person lecture. Awesome man, great professor!
