She is an ok english professor tries to make the class less painful but it is still painful. Half of the readings are old english so who knows if you will even do them. Her grading on your papers makes less than any sense, pretty sure I got docked a letter grade because she didn't like my writing style even though my paper was as she claimed great. Also got docked because my paper topic was not what she wanted even though she approved it and then finally because my conclusion did not have new ideas and instead summed up my paper. So if you want an english class where your papers are graded on a whim and not logical reasoning this professor is for you!
I love Casey so much as a professor. She's the first professor I've ever had at UVA that says she wants to foster open discussion and then actually sits back and lets the students talk, but she does enter in with challenging ideas and concepts. some of the reading is a little dry and she admits it, but she's really trying to make a comprehensive syllabus. and the class I had was so full of discussion it was really nice to be in. Casey makes herself available and helps with any questions you might have about the three papers you have to write.
Casey Ireland was an amazing instructor. For a class that fulfills the 2nd writing requirement, we had about 3 papers (each increasing in length). The topic was pretty interesting to me, but some would find environmental criticism in literature boring, so just be very aware of the topic because that is the entire reading list. If you put effort into your writing, actually do the reading for the most part, and participate in discussion (Ireland really loves discussion-based lectures), you will be perfectly fine. I would recommend any course with Ireland because she's one of the few English teachers that actually criticizes your writing in a constructive and extremely beneficial manner without just destroying your work.
