Great class. Earl makes it easy for anyone to learn the programs. He can go pretty fast sometimes during the actual class time, though he has all of the steps online. He encourages you to follow along and not to take notes. The class grade is determined by a modeling project of a building of your choice. You basically work on it all semester. It is definitely a puzzle piece at first and takes a decent amount of work and effort, but at the end you know your building like the back of your hand and the TAs are pretty helpful, but its very much trial and error and figuring out the software for yourself through the remodel of your building. This class definitely saved my semester GPA. If you are consistent with putting in work the project overall is not really bad and you get to have some great looking renders that are fun to show off. Earl is also a gem. Super intelligent and a great guy.

Professor puts in an effort to make his lectures fun and informational. Loved learning how to use Rhino in a classroom setting with a reasonable course timeline. He and his TAs are always available and he provides a lot of online resources that are easy to follow. This course isn't just for architecture students because Rhino can be flexible to any disciplinary.

really good class and i would recommend. i am a cs major and loved it especially since you get to use python scripting. i prob spent a little to much time on the class tbh but i really enjoyed it . we had to make radiolaria for cs majors.. i ended up making like a dozen different specimens since i thought it was cool, but one should be enough, overall great class and you will enjoy.

Earl's 3D modeling class is mostly based on the tutorials on Rhino 6 during discussion times and supplemental concept introduced in the general lecture. This class teaches you to think of space in geometric forms and Earl encouraged you to model your thought digitally. The final project is to render a building anywhere in the world, which is actually pretty fun and you get cool photos to show off in the end. Get a good TA to help with the technical issues, which would actually drive you mad. Last thing, beware Earl's corny jokes and random animation videos he showed during lecture.

Earl is very knowledgeable and cares about your success. He is very open and flexible to finding time to meet to help you if you need it and the SIAs are helpful as well, but if you don't figure something out Earl will definitely be able to help. This class is helpful for architecture students but I would also recommend it to anyone interested in learning Rhino or interested in computers. This class also isn't too much work.

Earl is a great person who cares about your success. He is on the geekier side of professors at UVA and worked on developing some of the animation programs we use. He will always make time to help with any issues you have. His class revolves around online workshops that he has written and guides you through in class. They can be quite slow at times since he makes sure everyone is keeping up, but will completely blow by you if you stop paying attention for a few minutes, leaving you very confused. Since the workshops are uploaded to his website before class, you can often do the workshop at a faster pace by yourself leaving you 20-30 minutes of free time at the end. The final project (multiple renderings of a building you selected to model as well as a short basic animation of the building) makes up a majority of your grade so do a good job on that but otherwise focus on studio projects. Use your TAs as they can often solve your problems quickly and typically there is an easier work around that just requires a of repetition of basic commands. Also if you are not an architecture student, Earl will help you tailor your projects for your interests.
