Great course, good professor! She sometimes doesn't respond to emails timely and sometimes it seems like she doesn't even understand the material, but overall a really good course and a really nice professor. Not a lot of homework unless we are doing group projects - but you only have 3 of those. Overall, if you have to take ENGR 1620 take it with Professor Reimers.
While Reimers was by no means my favorite professor that I have ever had, I don't necessarily think she deserves all the criticism she gets. This class was definitely not a walk in the park, and most of your grade is made up of group projects that can end up being time consuming and tedious. However, if you follow the instructions and format your work properly, she is generally a pretty relaxed grader. NOTE: she does not accept late work of any kind and will give you zeros on anything turned in late (trust me, she will check the last edited date on your Google Doc every time). The tests were not easy, but if you keep up with the readings and study using the study guide, you'll be fine. Other than that, I feel like I got a good understanding of what engineering is and all the different branches that you can major in here. This class felt a lot like a high school class, which made it easier on us first years.
Reimers isn't a terrible person but her class is absolutely horrible, avoid at all costs. The main problem is that she is unresponsive and uncoordinated. Her class has no direction, and requires WAY too much time and money. The class is centered around textbook engineering concepts instead of practical useful work. The projects involve heavy writing work, much more than the actual hands-on work, with "deliverables" due every week or so that require you to document every little step of each project in ridiculous detail according to her dumb requirements. Moreover, her tests on the textbook readings were incredibly difficult. I would highly recommend not taking this class, definitely not an easy A, she makes you work your butt off just to get a B. Overall the class just isn't a rewarding experience at all - you're going to get nothing out of it - you're probably going to lose a few IQ points taking this class just by reading the textbook and doing her stupid deliverables.
A lot of group work. Not very much individual work. The tests were tricky, however they aren't worth much of your grade. As long as your group works together on the group assignments the class is no problem. Professor Reimers cares about her students and will try and help you, she is always there to talk.
Here's the deal. Mrs. Reimers is a great, engaging, and has good intentions. I learned so much about myself, my engineering preferences, and the dynamics that go into group projects and working as a team. Getting a chance to perform hands on work was a very rewarding experience, and personally I thought Reimers did a good job of teaching us how engineering work will be in the future, particularly working in different types of teams on a variety of interesting projects. However, since she is a new teacher there were a few kinks in the class for sure. The projects were fun for the most part other than the fact that both the 3D printing hanger project and RedBot project were not allocated nearly as much time as the Mudwatt fuel cell one (which was arguably the easiest one). If given more time on the projects, the class would not have been nearly as stressful. I personally put in a solid 4 or so hours outside of class per week, not including the weeks when projects were due, compared to peers in other sections of ENGR 1620 that only put in about 1-2 hours per week outside of class but are still getting better grades than nearly everyone in Reimers's classes. I liked how rewarding the class was for me personally, but I at least wish there was a curve so that those who worked hard to get what they have would at least be rewarded with an A. If the harshness of the grading policy in this class were fixed, I would definitely recommend Reimers as a teacher that will allow you to do interesting, hands on work and make great friendships with teammates along the way.
The instructor was very unfair with grading. Very little instruction was given on most assignments. Then these assignments were graded like we were professional engineers, not first semester engineers. The instructor did not care about the grades of the students and wanted us to fail so we could learn from our mistakes. However, she graded us based on our first attempt and gave out poor grades. Also, the lessons we learned in one project sometimes could not be applied to other projects. This course is known as a relaxed course, however, our class was a lot harder and demanding than all the other ENGR 1620 classes. We were one of few, if any, classes that had written tests based on a textbook. This class should be based on projects and classroom work, but most of the work was done out of class and strictly followed the textbook's definition of what our work should look like. One of the biggest problems I had with the instructor was that she stressed that we needed to fail and then learn from our mistakes. However, she did not grade 75% of our assignments and give feedback until the last month of the semester. We turned projects in during October that weren't looked at until December. We were not able to learn from our mistakes until she gave feedback on these assignments, and by the time they were graded, we had already turned in our final project. Overall, the teacher was approachable and a good adviser but I strongly disliked this course because of the lack of effort from the instructor.
Ann Reimers is the worst teacher I have currently. Not only is she a harsh grader (who doesn't accept late work), she also assigns many projects throughout the semester with random students. Her homework is mostly reading in the beginning of the year, but as you gain projects, they become your main source of work. Our year, she also gave us 2 extremely hard tests (averages were around 80 for both), which were based solely on readings and did not cover any material in class. If you pick Reimers as your ENGR 1620 teachers, not only will you have way more work than your fellow students, the class is less fun because it is more stressful, and you will get a lower grade. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Professor Reimers is an excellent professor who really does know her stuff. However, this class is supposed to be an intro class that is a bit of a GPA boost for engineers. This class is not. For what this class is, there was way to much homework and throughout the semester you are forced to deal with multiple different assignments at a time. You have at least three different assignments due per week and you have to constantly check the collab for assignments because she does not let you know when she assigns homework, particularly the journals. Do not take this class unless you want a class that is way too much work.
