SOC 2520

Professor Aviles is a solid teacher. The class overall is super interesting and covers a lot of unique topics that probably wouldn't get covered in any other class. The lectures are super well organized and easy to follow and the discussion section was very chill. Only thing is that there is a decent amount of reading for this class. However, if you are interested at all in these topics, the readings were not bad at all. Exams were easy as well, so I would recommend this class if you are looking for a pretty low stakes interesting class.

BEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN AT UVA. I am a media studies major, so this course had nothing to do with my studies, but I found the content very interesting. Professor Aviles is one of the best professors I have had, and the university needs to have more professors like her. I cannot say enough good things about her. There was only one TA for all three sections and she was amazing. She provoked great conversations and made me feel so comfortable participating. Grade breakdown: section participation 10%, weekly section assignments 20%, midterm 1 15%, midterm 2 25%, final 30%. There were multiple times extra credit was offered and the tasks were very easy but effective (creating kahoots, taking notes for the class, etc). I am such a critical person and I honestly cannot say enough good things about this course and the professor.
