Out of all of the History of English series, this one is the best. Cushman and Levenson are great lecturers and really keep you engaged, whether its through literature, music or jokes. The literature was great, with works from Yeats, Joyce, Hemingway, Bishop, etc. Brandon Walsh is an awesome TA and will help you every step of the way! There are weekly reading quizzes (which can vary in difficulty, depending on your TA), a midterm, and a final. The reading is not bad and I recommend doing most of it.
This class was definately more interesting that ENGL 3820, and Cushman and Levenson are excellent lecturers. The reading can be extensive at times but it is manageable. In addition to that Megan was an excellent TA. She's very passionate and gave great feedback on papers. This course was a nice way to end the ENGL "History of Literatures in English" series.
Levenson and Cushman are both very interesting lecturers who made the material fun to learn about. Despite this, I still disliked almost everything we read in the course: much of it was difficult to understand and fairly long. The course certainly taught me a lot about modernism, but I'm not sure I'd be interested in taking another modern lit class in the future.
Both Levenson and Cushman are scary smart, lectures are both engaging and the reading selection is interesting. There is a lot to read, but it is worth it. I didn't know that much about modernism before this class, but it is a really relevant and interesting literary time period to study. Brandon is an awesome TA, extremely helpful in office hours and always prepared. He's a good discussion leader too.
Megan is extremely passionate about the material we read and about hearing our comments. She is by far the best TA I have had at this school. If you're taking this class and not even an English major make sure to be in her discussion...there is never a moment she won;t have something interesting to say! Love her!
I loved this class. Despite a fair amount of reading, Cushman and Levenson make everything worthwhile. Also, Shaun Cullen was one of the best TA's I have had so far as an English major. He is not the easiest grader, but he is open to many ideas, and I believe that everyone in our disucssion got at least a B+ or higher
Great class, basically what you've already heard about it. Lectures were not as great as I've heard, but definitely more enjoyable than most. The reading load, especially the novels, is pretty intensive and somewhat difficult to accomplish sometimes. But overall, a great class, especially for a required one.
The two discussion sections a week is definitely obnoxious (though inherently part of the 380 series, take it with Jason, he's hysterical and insightful and really encourages some worthwhile discussion), but Cushman and Levenson are just unbelievable. The readings are amazing. It's really that simple. A must-take class at U.Va.
This class is PHENOMENAL. I'm not an English major and I've only taken one other English class but EVERYONE at UVA ought to take it. Cushman and Levenson are two of the brightest, funniest, coolest teachers at the University. The books you read are great--they are all famous ones that you ought to read anyway, and the lectures are so interesting and so much fun. Far and away one of the top three classes I've taken here--sign up quick!
The lectures are well given and clever. The readings are interesting. The only annoying part is having discussion two days a week (yawn), but not bad if you get a good discussion leader (I totally recommend Elizabeth Anker). My first of the 300 level Engl series and I had way too much fun for a required survey course.
This is a really fun class. Granted, it's hard to get into especially if you're an English major, and if you're an English major you'd have to take it anyway. But the lectures are well-prepared, with witty as well as meaty content. Both professors are very easy-going and intelligent, making the class very insightful overall. I enjoyed this class thoroughly - one of my favorite English classes of all time.
