Hale is a good professor and her lectures teach you a lot about U.S. History. However, she is extremely unorganized and would sometimes not even send it out the questions for the reader response papers until the day they were due. They were only one page single-spaced papers for discussion, but it could be frustrating if you were busy on Thursdays. I also felt that she did not make the format of the midterm and final clear. She sent it the format but on exam day it was different then what she had sent out with an extra essay for the final and a lack of options on the essay which was promised for the midterm. Overall, she is a great lecturer but I felt like the lack of organization and small amount of assignments made it hard to do well unless you aced the midterm and final. I ended up with a B+ which was frustrating since I was on top of the reading and got a 100 on all the response papers. Take this class at your own discretion. #tCFspring2022
This course was fantastic. I took it to fulfill my history requirement and I'm so glad that I chose this one. The subject matter is mainly segregation and how it impacts how we look at race, gender, etc. Grace Hale is an amazing professor; she knows so much about what she's teaching (she wrote one of the books we read) and she is as equally passionate. Homework is due once a week during discussion- one page response to the reading, guided by some overarching question, not too bad and graded by the TAs. Overall, my favorite class at UVA thus far. Highly recommend.
I really really enjoyed this class. I don't typically like history, but I took it to fulfill my history requirement for the College. Professor Hale is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and is also a very engaging lecturer. She makes all the concepts very clear and helps you understand how all the individual parts of history tie into the bigger picture of race and civil rights in the South. The material is pretty interesting too. The reading per week varies, sometimes it can be pretty dry and a little lengthy and other times it's not too bad. There's also a fair amount of movies and documentaries that they have you watch. You can get away with skimming/half watching sometimes, but some texts are crucial for the course. You write a one-page single spaced reading response for discussion each week which really isn't too bad and is a godsend around the midterm and final when you have those to look back on. Discussion is helpful and the TAs (John and Joey) were great, and also were fairly easy graders. Aside from the reading responses there's just a midterm and a final. If you don't want to ever have to write a long paper than this is the history class for you. Overall, really great class with really interesting historical perspectives that you will come away better for.
This was one of the best classes if not THE best class I've taken at UVA. I was already very passionate about civil rights history, but this class changed my perspective entirely, gave me a whole new passion for civil rights, and I learned so much about how current issues are connected to historical problems. Grace Hale is very energized and knowledgeable. She is down to earth and blunt which makes her lectures powerful. There was a lot of reading, but you really don't have to do all of it to follow the class. Show up to class though and bring plenty of paper or battery power, bc you'll be taking a lot of notes. I remember that there was a take home/open note midterm/paper and then a final paper that was also take home, open note. The class is not hard if you are willing to do some work. If you are, it is extremely rewarding.
Horrible Class. I love U.S. history and this time period; however, Hale assigns WAY too much reading for discussion and for the papers. The reading doesn't always match lecture and is kind of ridiculous. This is one of the worst history classes at UVA. The final is 3 papers, and she only gave us 6 days to work on it. If you like for readings, discussion, and lecture to all match up and make things less confusing then this is not the class for you.
