I took Hemispheric Latinx Literature with Lamas. She is an excellent professor. At research-driven universities like UVA, teaching is often a secondary or tertiary priority for professors. This is not the case with Lamas. She cares deeply about the issues discussed in the novels, and she cares about her students. I highly recommend any course with her. As for the workload, you read about 50 pages during the week and about 100 pages on the weekends. The novels are easy reads though, so it's nothing like reading 100 pages of a textbook. I actually enjoyed doing the readings, and 100 pages of these novels only took me about 2 hours, varying slightly depending on the book. You write one midterm and one final, and as long as you're capable of writing an in-depth literary analysis, you'll do well. This was my first English class, taken in the fall of my second year, and I got an A. Lamas won't accept crap though; your paper can't be a shallow high-school paper. You need to read the books and write about your interpretations. If you can dig in and read into the novels enough to fill a 6-8 page paper, you're golden. Highly recommend this class and Lamas as a professor.
