Cori is a fantastic professor for this class, very pleasant and knowledgable and willing to have discussion and recognize that not even she knows every correct answer in this field. Lots of readings in this class but they're actually quite interesting and really ignites a lot of interest in the field. I'm definitely taking more WGS classes after this one. Writings aren't too hard if you write on things that interest you! Engaging in discussion not only makes you look good but also helps you think of strong arguments for your writing. Pay attention to the writing lessons that the TAs and professors teach you and you will get far. Highly recommended for ANYONE willing to let their views of the world be challenged and broadened.
Honestly, I was so excited to take this class. I loved the readings that I was required to do for this class, but everything else I did not like. The lectures we had were okay. Professor Field was a good lecturer, but we couldn't go in depth about many topics because of the breadth of topics covered. I would rather cover less topics but go more in depth.
Also, for someone like me who doesn't like to participate but rather to listen, you have to talk in this class to get participation points.
The thing I disliked the most about this class was the discussion. Maybe it was because of my TA, but honestly, I didn't learn from having discussions. Tom was really really nice, but wasn't helpful with writing advice. I am an ok/decent writer, but I consistently got low B's on my papers. When I tried to ask for help, the advice I was given was that "practice will help". How am I supposed to practice in a class that only has 3 big essays as the biggest grades? Honestly, I thought the class graded too difficulty and I'm trying not to sound pissed off but I am. Even the writing reflection, where I was supposed to reflect on what I learned this year and how I used my new skills in my last essay, was graded so harshly. I am really mad about how bad my grade ended up being in this class and would not recommend taking this class with this professor. I mean, look at the damn grade distribution. I've heard that even other higher level WGS classes are better and easier but this class turned me off completely from any other WGS classes. I'm honestly pretty upset that not only were things graded so difficultly, but also there was barely any help when I looked for it.
Professor Field tries way too hard to make sure that this isn't seen as a joke class- which it should be. Way too much reading. Spent as much time each week on this as I did for a 4 credit course in my major. Interesting stuff but would recommend taking it with the professor that has a reputation of being easier.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH CORINNE FIELD. I was recommended to take this class by friends with Professor Abbigail Arnold. Unfortunately, her class was full and I ended up in this class instead. While the course material is interesting, there was WAY too much reading, you had to complete online forums every other night, and the TAs were incredibly harsh with the gradings. I was told that if you put in the work with this class, the grade would come. But if you take this class with Corinne Field and her TAs, this will not happen. I have never struggled with writing before and assumed that since I was actually interested in the matter at hand, am a talented writer, and was putting in the work every single day, I would be fine...quite the contrary. Save yourself the headache and protect your GPA by finding a different instructor if you plan on taking this course. I promise you won't regret it.
One of the worst classes at UVA. I was skeptical about taking it in the first place, but I gave it a shot it because it seemed fairly easy and I needed to fulfill a requirement.
While I did decent (A-), this class is the most embarrassing, cringeworthy, and unapologetically political one I've taken at UVA. This class is basically your leftist wet dream infused in one bubble. Corinne a very annoying and stubborn professor, and she teaches some of the weirdest and most boring content in lecture while simultaneously praising bat-sh*t crazy feminist ideas and harking on against oppression, the society, and American values in general. I hate to admit it, but it's true: if you write ANYTHING REMOTELY CONSERVATIVE, your TA will give you a bad grade. If you dare even challenge the incredibly left-leaning writers during discussions, prepare to get a bad grade. No matter how politely or passively you want to offer your own viewpoint, it's not acceptable.
This class alone speaks for why Gender Studies is a taboo and a joke of a major that is entirely useless and laughable.
Seriously, do not take this class. The readings are interesting enough, but it is not enough to get through the amount that is due and the insanity of the grading. I received writing awards in high school, yet all my papers were graded so harshly that I question my ability to write anything. There are no exams, but that still is not good enough. The professor is perfectly nice an a decently interesting lecturer, but absolutely insane grading for it being and introduction course.
