Really really enjoyable course! Professor Farooqi is nice and pretty funny and she really does care about her students. The reading is slightly above average, but it's pretty reasonable overall and the reading is much more important for the first half of the semester rather than the second half. Great class to do your nonwestern and second writing requirement with; you learn a ton and are challenged to reconsider a lot of your conceptions about the world. I fully recommend this class!
This class could have been more interesting, but it just wasn't. Professor Farooqi expects a lot from you, so be sure to be on top of your readings. She can be funny and chill, but then she can be really condescending. She expects everyone to participate and to give a profound answer. She will call you out for having a generic answer or just not being as analytical as she wanted. You should review your notes always and remember the small details and dates that this class teaches-- she gets frustrated if you don't remember everything she teaches. I did not enjoy her class.
This class is composed of six response papers, one group project, one quiz, and one final paper. She never lets you know what her expectations are for the papers or project. You just have to come up with something creative and smart to appeal to her. She has a TA who grades the response papers, and the TA is awful. She would give such low grades, so Professor Farooqi increases your grade by a bit. But she is heavily influenced by the TA, so her grades aren't as high as the ones given without the TA.
I would not take this class again if I were given the chance.
Professor Farooqi is the best professor I have ever had at this school. Where other teachers force you to think within the confines of a state-funded syllabus, Farooqi expands the horizons of our creativity. Her lectures were very discussion-friendly, and she would always ask very intuitive and thought-provoking questions. She had an uncanny ability of getting even the shyest students involved in discussions.
Professor Farooqi not only taught us about Dalit literature, she also opened our eyes to the tragedy and calamity that is the Indian caste system. She opened each of our eyes to the hypocrisy and medieval nature of a modern day institution. She showed us perspectives of a civilization, its rules and regulations, and its figureheads that we could not have seen had we not taken this class.
I HATE learning about India. I hate learning about my culture. I hate it so much, I couldn't care less about Hinduism, the castes, Gandhi, or literature. But Professor Farooqi changed me. She not only opened my eyes, but my mind. I learned so much in this class, but the knowledge I gained will stick with me through life. She has affected me so much that I am switching from Pre-Law to Pre-Batten. I want to work in SOuth Asian studies to help the underprivileged. And I owe it all to Professor Farooqi.
Professor Farooqi in nature is the nicest woman ever. Humorous, kind, passionate, caring, and intelligent. She honestly is like a mother away from home. She puts in 150% percent, and genuinely cares about the well being of her students. Honestly, she is amazing. I highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to experience the beauty of UVA. I hope I can take another one of her classes sometime in the future.
