This class is super fun and the discussions we have are great. Although I was told this was an easy A class, I prioritized this class before others, doing all the readings and taking detailed notes during class. However, I did below average on the midterm even though I spent long hours studying for the test. The midterm and final are very ill-representative of what you know about public health or how much reading you do. You have to be a good test taker to do well in the class, and you also need to know every single detail of every powerpoint to be able to answer test questions with confidence. I love public health and am planning on pursuing a career in the field, but taking this class was a bit disappointing.
I really liked this class! You get a good overall feel of public health and the format of the class is nice in that its broken up into small groups/discussions some classes. You don't need to read the book, just go to class and study the powerpoints, read all the articles, and case study answers and you should def get an A or A-
Really easy class. You don't need to read the book, but you should read the case studies and stuff for small group work. Professor Hornsby is great (Pannone is a bit of an ass) and really helpful. She really wants everyone in the class to succeed.
The tests were fine, with the exception of some funky questions that seemed more opinion based than fact based. The hard part about the class was participation - you couldn't have any unexcused absences. The group project wasn't bad either, just make sure you listen to all of her edits/adjustments.
This class was very enjoyable. and Prof. Hornsby was super passionate about PHS, and it really made each class fun to go to. Every other class we did group work, mostly case studies that brought up interesting and diverse situations or topics. The class also included a 5 page group paper on a health disparity topic, which was not too bad if your group was cooperative. Prof. Hornsby is a great resource for teaching how to write academic papers, and edited the papers twice before our final copies were due.
The only qualm I had about this class was that the graded tests and quizzes sometimes had subjective questions on them.
