I warn you: please do not take this class unless this SPECIFIC course is for your major or a requirement. This is the worst class I have ever taken. The professor is cold, uncaring, and looks down on her students harshly. Several times, I put up my hand to ask a question (our class was only three people, mind you; everyone else dropped out) and was blatantly ignored. If you didn't have her opinion, you were shunned. She picked obvious favorites. The grading--- the grading is insanely unfair to the point that it seems staged, as to simulate "progress," though there is no learning done whatsoever in the course. We were never taught how to write a paper for this class, or any material whatsoever. We were never shown an example of a "adequate" paper, and yet were expected to jump through hoops to guess what she wanted. Her tests were three hours of writing and her "formal papers" were 7 and 10 pages-- this wouldn't be a big deal, but it seemed like they were long for the sake of being long. Many nights have I been up all night and upset over this course. Please avoid this class, and the professor, if you care about your GPA, or your mental health.
Professor Kim is by far the worst, most difficult, and demeaning professor I have ever taken. She ignores students, belittles their point of views, and deflects opinions that don't reflect her own. If you enjoy education and everything it stands for, avoid this course. She never actually teaches you anything, and expects perfect results. I can't believe this is actually taught at UVA. This is not worth your time, effort, or money.
You get to watch good movies but beware of the grading. She is very tough with the papers. We do weekly film journals and for the first half of the semester the vast majority were not doing so hot..then magically we all started to improve in the final half. Very critical on the 2 papers. You can chill most of the time except for when the two papers are due but she is very tough with grades. I only think one person got an A in our class.
Homework for each week is to watch a film, read the articles that complement it, and to write a 2 pg analysis. The workload is not demanding; however, Professor Kim is an extremely difficult grader. Every point really matters... it's definitely not a gpa booster class. Although she knows what she's talking about, her reactions to students thoughts and comments during the discussions were sometimes discouraging.
