This is a super-easy course if you follow the directions. Every week, you have to do an assignment in either MS Excel or Mathcad (another program you'll get) and drop it off by Friday afternoon. It's just designed to get you familiar with the software.
You DO NOT have to go to the help sessions every week; they're there if you need help on the assignments. I only went to one or two and got my questions answered really quickly.
Some people complain about Cahen being a jerk; I didn't find this true at all. As long as you're respectful and show that you care about the work, he's more than happy to help you. He might make a semi-harsh comment every once in a while, but he doesn't mean anything by it. He's a no-nonsense kind of guy and the work reflects that.
Just make sure you read everything on the assignment, double check it, and LABEL EVERYTHING - he will take points off if you don't follow directions.
I like this class because it's nothing more than a weekly assignment class, and it's easy to get 90+ in those if you try. There are also office hours 4 days a week so you shouldn't have difficulty. Occasionally when mathCAD ceases to function properly, (a drawback of this class) the Professor allows you to submit it late so that you can get it working
This is a do-it-yourself sort of course. It teaches you skills on Excel and Mathcad. Assignments are up on collab and are due on Fridays by 4:00 pm. Just don't be late in turning it in, follow instructions, and you shouldn't need to go in to help hours at all. Cahen is kind of scary, but fair. I turned in one assignment late, and he let it slide but ominously said "Don't do it again. I'll remember you." Needless to say, all my other assignments were turned in on time.
Cahen is incredibly arrogant. He acts like the students are idiots when they ask questions. I always avoided getting him in the help sessions because the TA's will just give you the answer. Also, my percent average in this class is a 93, but he assigned me an A-, because he wanted to "normalize the grade distribution." if you're in the E school, you're going to have to deal with him.
Basically your grade is out of your control in this class, because it can be dropped from a 96 to an A- on a hunch that your TA was an easier grader (maybe your section was just better?). It is pretty simple though you just have to get 100s on everything because I don't think they will curve a 100 down, but who knows...
You have weekly homeworks, and that is all that the course is based on. The homeworks have to do with excel and mathcad. I am not sure how useful mathcad is in the real world and how important it is to know its syntax but I did not like the program mathcad that much. There were tons of issues with getting things to work properly. On top of that the grading was extremely erratic. You can get screwed for the stupidest things. This is necessary for engineers, so my advice is just be as thorough as possible, take those extra few minutes rather than just hitting print.
This class is mandatory for all engineers, so I guess you don't really have a choice. But this class is based strictly on weekly assignments, which consist of Excel, Mathcad, and one freehand drawing (12 in total for me). Grading is a bit arbitrary at first, but you catch on pretty quickly. All in all, just do as you're told, and watch for petty errors and you're guaranteed a good grade.
