Although I sometimes felt a bit intimidated by/inferior to all the English majors in the class, I really enjoyed learning about literary theory. Felski is a very warm and personable professor. Class switched between lecture and discussion modes. We had to summarize our readings each week, which took wayyy more time and energy than the 5% of our grade that it counted towards. However, definitely very useful when it came to studying for the midterm and final. We had two essays in addition to the exams: one rooted in critical theory and the other in post-critical (we could choose whatever book/film/text/material we wanted to discuss). Felski was insistent on us coming to office hours so that she could help us prepare for the papers. Talking with my classmates, it seems like our only disappointment with the course (although pretty universal) was in how little we talked about fan culture.
