This class is TERRIBLE - but don't let that scare you away from being a Kinesiology major. Dr. Kelly is a great professor, he just doesn't want to teach this class and therefore doesn't really care about making it worthwhile. It seems dumb and really hard - just read the textbook, as boring as it is. All the test questions come from there. Be prepared to be asked stupid, random facts, that's just Kelly. This class sucks but once you get through it you will LOVE being in Kines!!
Don't let this class scare you away from the major. Once you get past it, everything get better.
Professor Kelly quite obviously does not want to be teaching this class. Read the textbook, listen to the guest lecturers, power through the group projects.
But seriously, kinesiology is awesome. This class is not.
Professor Kelly is a great professor and very knowledgeable, but this course is so simple and shallow in many aspects. The course literally just teaches you about all the different careers under the scope of kinesiology and gives brief background and information on each. The group projects are pretty horrible but just do them and you'll get an A on them. No need to read the textbook, just scan for keywords and read the little summaries. The guest lectures are awesome, be sure not to miss them. It was also interesting being able to run the mile in a class again. Just push through it!
With all due respect, this class was the biggest waste of time, and the most disappointing course I have taken at UVA. I took this class thinking it would be interesting, with the expectation of learning a thing or two. Instead, I showed up to every class to analyze how elementary school P.E teachers run their class. Absolutely ridiculous. I earned an A in the orgos, A in the gen chems, A in the bios, and A+s in physics both semesters, and got an A- in this class (one of my few at UVA). And I definitely put in the time for this class. The final had questions like: what is the leading cause of death in americans? The answer will be stated as something like smoking in class, but the answer key will say diet or something different. Extremely disappointing. He also didn't drop any questions, which he promised to do. I cannot reiterate enough how much I do not recommend taking this class. Take this review with a grain of salt, however; maybe I am slightly biased due to the grade I received.
